Discover Petworth

Petworth is located in the South Downs National Park, just over an hour’s drive from London and half an hour from the South Coast. Both the A283 and the A272 pass through the village.

The closest train station is Pulborough, or further afield Haslemere. Both have services from London. From there, visitors can hire a car for the remaining 5¼ miles or catch the No. 1 Stagecoach service, which passes through the station. There is also the option of Book-a-Bus which is run by West Sussex County Council. For those arriving by air, the closest airports are London Gatwick (40 minutes drive), London Heathrow (1 hour drive) or Southampton Airport (1 hour drive).

Another draw for sport fans is polo at Cowdray Estate. One of the busiest clubs in the world, it plays host to over 450 matches every year. Polo enthusiasts and novices alike are sure to be won over by the beautiful landscape that surrounds its pitches.

Named by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the best towns in the UK to shop for antiques, Petworth is home to over 30 antique shops, all adhering to a strict code of practice. Find treasures from over 35 dealers under one roof at the Petworth Antiques Market, a refurbished 275 square metre space known for everything from fine silver and decorative furniture to vintage and retro goods.

A must-visit is the Augus­tus Brandt show­room, sit­u­ated in Clifford House on Market Square. An entic­ing and carefully curated retail des­ti­na­tion, it comprises a lifestyle shop, antiques and bespoke furniture alongside modern and contemporary furniture, works of art, paintings and prints, silver and jewellery.

Running since 1979, the excellent Petworth Festival hosts two annual events: a cultural festival in July, and a literary festival in October. The summer festival hosts concerts across a wide range of genres including jazz, classical, comedy, world music and more, with events promoting the work of young performers and major artists alike. Founded in 2011, the Autumn Literary Festival has featured appearances by authors such as Michael Palin, Julian Fellowes, Max Hastings, children’s author Lauren Child and many others.
