Petworth is a fine market town with many handsome houses, quaint lanes, an abundance of antique shops (37 within an half mile radius at the last count) and many other excellent shops to cover all interests.
Petworth House is a vast 17thC mansion set in a 700 acres deer park designed by “Capability” Brown. The house contains the National Trust’s finest collection of pictures with numerous paintings by Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Blake; fine furniture, carvings by Grinling Gibbons, sculpture and interesting kitchens with a 1,000 piece copper batterie de cuisine.
Petworth Cottage Museum is an intriguing estate worker's cottage restored and furnished as it might have been in about 1910. Bignor Roman Villa, the stunning remains of a Roman home and farm with world-class mosaic floors is just a few miles South in a spectacular Downland setting with walks through the beautiful Nyetimber vineyard.
Chichester is 15 miles away with many interesting shops and restaurants all within the Roman walls of this historic city, home to the renowned Festival Theatre. The delightful town of Arundel, 11 miles away, with a great castle steeped in nearly 1,000 years of history, situated in magnificent grounds overlooking the River Arun, houses a magnificent collection of fine furniture and great paintings.
Nearby - Goodwood, one of the loveliest and most famous racecourses and the historic motor racing circuit; Cowdray Park the home of British Polo; Parham House and Gardens dating back to 1577; West Dean Gardens and The Weald & Downland open air museum; Denmans Garden adjacent to Fontwell racecourse ; Kingley Vale, a National Nature Reserve, home to one of Europe's most impressive yew forests, some trees being as much as 2,000 years old.
